The weather outside was cold, wet and miserable…but the atmosphere at the Compton Abbas Christmas Club Night was warm, friendly and Merry! It cannot be denied, the effort put in by our club members for the fancy dress costumes was, quite frankly, sensational. After the initial shock of seeing two of our male staff members dressed in drag- supposedly as Emma and Laura, there was time to enjoy Nick Hill (the winner of our fancy dress competition, who received a whole year’s free membership, congratulations!) doing a very good imitation of a Red Baron complete with wings! Our very own mascot Jack English as a ‘French aviation pioneer’, Bernard Scam as an angel, Graham Bowen as ‘Knight Rating’ and many other excellent costumes! Apart from Nick Robinson of course…who incurred the penalty of wearing a rather fetching elf hat for the duration of the night, Captain Grass please make more effort next time!
Entertainment commenced with ‘Angie and the Comptonettes’ making their debut performance! With Louise, Emma and Laura dressed as Captain and stewardesses, what could possibly have gone wrong! Customised tunes such as ‘Moggy the Red Nose Reindeer’ and ‘Let it Fly’ were met with rapturous applause from the audience; we are currently looking for an agent…
After an impromptu round of politically incorrect jokes (fantastic!), Louise hosted the first of our ‘All star Compton Mr & Mrs’, for those of you who don’t watch this on the telly it involves questions being asked about the Mrs to the Mr and vice versa – more fun than it sounds I promise! So this kicked off with Billy and Graham (…and we all learnt not to marry Billy…) the drag queen and Jack rattled through the second round, with Big Nick and Emma finishing off. All in all a successful game show! Unfortunately in all the excitement, we lost track of points and we still don’t know who the winner is, but thank you very much to all our contestants.
After much munching of nibbles and warm mince pies (courtesy of Mrs Hughes) it was time for Jack’s song ‘The Pilot’, which went down a treat! His song writing and singing talent shone through, and I’m sure he would like me to mention that he has his very own album out which you can all buy.
Then followed the soon to be annual paper airplane competition; Emma’s prize for winning was a trip round the British Virgin Islands in a very posh boat – that’s an incentive to win next year if ever there was one!
This finished off the night; it was a Wednesday after all! It was lovely to see so many of our members coming to Compton to celebrate Christmas with us – I am currently organizing our next club night for the end of January/beginning of February, unfortunately no singing from the Comptonnettes this time though! Merry Christmas!

Above - the hosts for the night! Captain Loulou with her crew, Emma and Laura. Jack wrote and performed a brilliant song about Compton which the boss appears slightly suprised about. Nick Hill in his fantastic costume which won him a years free membership for his efforts. Two of our staff members enjoying themselves a bit too much dressed as the Hughes girls...hopefully not too close a resemblance...
