About Compton Abbas Airfield

Compton Abbas Airfield Dorset is nationally known as one of the most picturesque airfields in the UK. Situated at over eight hundred feet above sea level, this very popular airfield commands spectacular panoramic views over some of England’s most beautiful countryside.

Visitors will soon realise that this airfield does not cater purely for the aviator, but has something for everyone, including the young, and the not so young. It has a large car park with a grass area where the kids can play whilst mum and dad relax and watch the aerial activities against the backdrop of rolling hills. There is a restaurant that produces home-style cooked meals or snacks that can be eaten on the terrace overlooking the runway. Morning coffee and afternoon tea taken against an ever changing scene is another good reason to visit. It also has a fully licensed bar serving a wide selection of wines, spirits and beers.

For those wishing to see the aviation side, many interesting vintage and historic aircraft are either based at or visit the airfield on regular occasions. Some of the aircraft can sometimes be seen practising aerobatics, this often being the highlight of a family’s visit. You can even have a go at flying yourself!

As well as being a busy airfield, local amenity and tourist attraction, the airfield lends itself to the young for educational purposes. Every year many hundreds of school children gain valuable experience by being able to indulge themselves in learning about how a multifaceted business runs. Just some of the subjects learnt at first hand are catering, health and hygiene, fire and rescue, most aviation related subjects, aircraft engineering and company accounts.

Another business carried out on the airfield is organic farming, an activity that produces a wide selection of crops. Sheep play their part in the multitude of activities by quietly grazing on the rotated areas allotted for them. Many species of wild flowers and plants thrive on the airfield, also many different breeds of bird and wild animals either live on or frequent the airfield. Walkers also make great use of the airfield and the surrounding countryside all year round.

It is a policy of the airfield that it works with the community, for the community and a policy that has gathered strength over the years. All plans for the airfields future play very heavily on carrying out activities with the utmost regard for the location in which the business is lucky enough to operate.
